Captain Moroni is My Favorite

Everytime I read about Captain Moroni I am amazed by this amazing individual and let me tell you why. I just finished reading (again after many times) the first few chapters where we first learn about him. I won't rehash (too much) all the different stories with him in it, yet I want to focus on why he's my favorite and what makes him one of the best characters in all the scriptures.

Courage & Stratagem

I am simply amazed at his courage this man had. He went up against some of the meanest and baddest villains in all the scriptures. He had such faith and dedication to the gospel and especially their freedoms, that he always stepped up to the plate. Also, this man was able out think and out smart the "bad" guys at just about every turn. Zarahemna and Amalickiah were 2 very incredible adversaries, but Captain Moroni had smarts and the Lord on his side and was able to think of battle strategies and fortifications that left both of these enemies bewildered and frustrated.

Teacher & Love

What was even more incredible than his courage and strategies, were what an amazing leader he was. The two qualities I think of when I think of Captain Moroni is: "Teacher" and "Love". This amazing leader had such love for his fellow brothers and sisters, that he was willing to risk his life just so his families and neighbors would have peace and their freedom (I think braveheart ripped off Captain Moroni's story). He trained all his troops with amazing strategy and skilled defensive armor that even though many life's were lost in these battles, they usually palled in comparison to those of the enemy.

Finally, not only is he my favorite, I'm pretty sure Captain Moroni was Mormon's favorite too. These are the words Mormon used to describe Captain Moroni:

"Yea, verily, verily I say unto you, if all men had been, and were, and ever would be, like unto Moroni, behold, the very powers of hell would have been shaken forever; yea, the devil would never have power over the hearts of the children of men."

And I truly believe this is the reason that when Mormon had his first son, what other name did he give him than that of Moroni!

Alma and Amulek Rock!

I am so amazed by Alma and Amulek, they were some of the most awesome missionaries of all time!

This week during my scripture study I read about Alma and Amulek teaching the Zoramites.

I took away 2 things from this study: Love and Prayer!

Love

Alma and Amulek truly did love the gospel, but more importantly they really loved the people around them, whether they were in or out of the gospel, even friend or foe.

When they heard that the Zoramites were fallen away from the gospel, they made it their priority to visit them and teach them. The Zoramites were not exactly next door, so Alma and Amulek packed their bags to visit them and serve them.

I always find it interesting that it is the poor and meek people who the ones to humble themselves and soften their hearts that the spirit can speak to them. I've wondered many times if I have had the same thing happen to me.

Prayer

One of the more important things that Alma and Amulek taught the Zoramites was prayer. I have been studying prayer a lot lately and realize that prayer is NOT EASY but is one of the most powerful tools we have.

Here are some of the things that they taught.

Alma taught that Heavenly Father is always listening to us, but here are some things that can help us in our prayers:

  • Faith
  • Humility
  • Charity

And if we do as Alma says and Cry in Mighty Prayer, we hope and pray that the Mercy of the Lord will be upon us.

Amulek taught we should pray always, in every place and at all times and about all things in our lives.

I have a long way to go, but having the great examples and scriptures from Alma and Amulek will help me with my communication with my Father in Heaven.
